New England Hosted the Atlantic Coast Cup competition this year. We were very fortunate to have the Essex County Club provide five clay and five grass courts for the event.  It is a spectacular venue and all the participants were greatly appreciative!

Unfortunately torrential rains on the first day forced the matches indoors.  Thankfully, the Woburn Racquet Club came to our rescue and we were able to get all of the scheduled matches in on the first day. A terrific dinner for the players and their guests took place at Essex that evening.  Henry Tiberio and John Shane were special guests of the New England team!

The second day of the competition was a gorgeous summer day and we were able to play all matches on the terrific courts at Essex.

65s:   The Atlantic Coast Cup 65s competition was hotly contested again this year! Playing for New England were Laury Hammel at #1 singles, George Deptula at #2 singles, Conway Felton and Bob McKinley at #1 doubles, Mas Kimball and Bill Drake at #2 doubles and George Ulrich and John Fournier at #3 doubles. On the first day, New England defeated the Mid-Atlantic team 5-0.  The score was misleading as the matches at first singles and first doubles were close and exciting three set matches!

On the second day, New England faced off against the Eastern team that had dispatched the Middle States team 5-0 on the first day.  In singles, Laury lost to a very tough Don Long at #1 and George Deptula ended up on the short end to Tom Walker 10-8 in the tie-break after splitting sets 5-7, 6-4.  In the doubles, John and George played terrific tennis and won 0 and 2.  At #3, Mas and Bill split sets with a very strong team of Bob McKenna and Doug Barrow and came through with an excellent 10-3 tie break to take the match.  At first doubles, Bob and Conway also split sets but came up short on the tie-break losing to Scott Estes and Mike O’Donnell!

75s:  The New England 75s team was very strong and emerged victorious with a 5-0 win over the Mid Atlantic team in the finals.  The N.E. Team playing on the plush grass courts of Essex Country Club in Manchester Mass. swept at  all five matches on the final day. On day one, N.E. defeated a strong Eastern section team 4 matches to one. Nick Ourusoff led off with a solid

win over Oz Winters in first singles 6-2, 6-0. Ernie True was defeated at second singles. The doubles was all New England with  Bob Dilworth and Roy Anderson winning 6-2,6-1,  Dick Canapa and Dave Lowry victorious at second doubles as was Omer Menard and Tom Larkin in the third slot.

Day two opened with an epic match between Nick Ourusoff and former Columbian Davis Cup player Gus Castillo representing Middle Alantic. Nick trailed 6-2 in the deciding tie-break but came back to win 10-8. Mid. Atl. had to default at second singles giving Ernie True the win. New England went on to sweep all three doubles. Things were in doubt until the end with both first and second doubles going to third set tie- breaks.

Our sincere thanks go out to the folks at Essex County Club for two wonderful days of tennis, a delicious dinner and a cordial staff.  Also to the Eastern, Middle States and Middle Alantic USTA sections for traveling such long distances to give us such friendly yet intense competition. Congratulations go out to Bob McKinley for a great job putting this all together.
