65/75 Atlantic Coast Cup Results

July 28, 29 2012

The Atlantic Coast Cup 65 teams were very well balanced with all the matches on both days settled by 3-2 scores.  After waiting around most of Saturday afternoon for the weather to clear, New England lost to Middle Atlantic 3-2 in a rain shortened one-set no ad format.  Bill White and Bill Ruth at #1 doubles and Bob Dunlop and John Fournier at #3 doubles won their matches.  We lost both singles with Gary Chavetz at #1 and George Ulrich at #2 succumbing to strong nationally ranked singles players Steve Gottlieb and Bob Davis.  Peter Allen and Tommie George at #2 doubles also went down.

On Sunday, we faced Middle States who had lost to Eastern by 3-2.  Peter Allen and Tommie George and Bob Dunlop and John Fournier took the #2 and #3 doubles.  Gary Chavetz lost to another strong opponent. Bill White and Bill Ruth lost a tightly contested match 6-4 in the third set.  George Ulrich lost the first set to Wolfgang Jaeger but came back to win the second set.  In the third set George was down 4-1, came back to 4 all, and then dropped serve.  With his opponent serving for the match at 5-4, George took the next 3 games to give New England a 3-2 win and third place.

In the Championship Match Eastern defeated Middle Atlantic 3-2.   Despite some of us not getting as much tennis as we hoped, we had a good time socializing with our friends from New England and the other sections during the rain delays and the banquet on Saturday night.

A gritty performance is the best way to describe New England`s 75 team at the Atlantic Coast Cup matches on July 28 and 29th at Philmont C. C. in North Philadelphia. Plagued by injuries, the N.E. team defeated Middle States 3-2, highlighted by George Boyce`s upset win at #2 singles. Because our #1 singles player Dick Canepa was injured, N.E. was allowed to have a player play two matches. To the dismay of Middle States, that player was Omer Menard. Omer teamed with Dick Mount to win at 2nd doubles and then with Tom Larkin to win at 3rd doubles giving N.E. the 3-2 victory.

On day two we ran into a talented Eastern team and were defeated 4-1 with Larkin and Menard the only victory. Peter Reiss playing with a leg injury but played well at #1 singles as did Dick Morse and Curt Tong at #1doubles.  George Boyce teamed with Dick Mount at #2 doubles.

Even with the constant rain delays the experience was great fun with competitive tennis and wonderful camaraderie.
