Concord CC Again Has a Big Menís 50 Singles Draw

August 7-9, 2009

The Concord CC 50s tournament again had a large menís singles draw Ė 26. But, it also had a pretty good womenís 50 doubles draw Ė four teams and some of the women players had never played a tournament before!

In other events, there were 5 menís doubles teams and three womenís singles players but no entries in the mixed 45 event.

The menís 50 singles event is the sectional and there were some very good matches. Local Concord CC member Dave Porter had a good tournament winning his first round easily and then going on to defeat 6th seed Chris Holmes in a very close match 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-0. He then lost to 1st seed David MacBurnie 6-1, 6-2.

In the semis, 2nd seed Wade Frame defeated 4th seed David Tien 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 in a contrast in styles. Wade then lost in the finals to David MacBurnie who won the singles without losing a set. Kevin Fisher of Milford, CT romped through the consolation losing only one game to win.

The menís doubles finals was won by 1st seeds Mike Kliebhan and Jack Daly over 2nd seeds Phil Kadesch and Rob Leroy 6-3, 6-2.An interesting human interest story is that Jack has had two knee replacements and has overcome testicular cancer but came back to play some outstanding tennis!

There was one match in the menís doubles consolation. Fred Buffum and Kevin OíNeil defeated Bob Simmons and Malcolm Swanson in a close three setter 6-7(8), 6-2, 10-8 (supertiebreaker in lieu of 3rd set). There is a human interest story here as well Ė Malcolm is over 70!

The womenís singles had three entries and they played round-robin. One player was also over 70, Priscilla Burlingham and she lost both her matches. Local Concord CC member Dorcas Miller defeated former MA resident Sarah Gladstone (now living in Panama) 6-2, 6-2 to win the womenís singles event.

Dorcas partnered with another Miller (Lynn, no relation) to defeat Pat Demling and Kelly Renner 6-3, 6-0 in the finals. Demling and Renner played a marathon semis match that took almost three hours defeating Lorie Gochenour and Eileen Roux 6-7(1), 6-3, 7-6(3). In the consolation, Robin Lazarow and Betty Mahon defeated Gochenour and Roux 6-3, 6-1.

As is usual at Concord CC tournaments, there was an informal party starting at 4PM on Saturday with snacks, beer and wine as well as good camaraderie while watching good tennis. TD Nigel Bentley again ran a great tournament and fun was had by all.

Next year, this tournament will be expanded to be one of the clay Senior Slams adding 55, 80, and 85 age groups. The 50 men's singles and doubles events will remain as Sectionals as well as one of the new Senior Slams, so put it on your calendar for next year.

Pictures from the tournament are below. We thought we had a picture of all the women's doubles players, but something went wrong and it was not there. Sorry gals :-(.
