Concord Country Club 50s Tournament Again a Big Success!

The Concord Country Club 50s tournament held August 8-10 was again a big success this year with the menís singles draw of 34 setting a record for the tournament. This is also the largest senior event draw so far in 2008. The weather was threatening, however, and only about half the matches scheduled for Friday play were in fact able to be played due to rain. TD Nigel Bentley then decided that the finals would not be played on Sunday but on a future date so that matches postponed on Friday would continue on Saturday and there would be no more than two matches in a day.

The match of the tournament occurred in the round of 32, one of the matches postponed on Friday due to rain. Unseeded Jeff Gola from Rhode Island played 2nd seed Bill Frost on Saturday and they played a 4.5 hour match won by Jeff in a big upset 6-7(11), 7-5, 6-4.Jeff went on to win two more rounds, ultimately losing to tournament winner Tim Riley in the semis. Jeff brought his whole family up on Sunday to watch him play in the quarters and semis. 4th seed Tim Riley went on to defeat 1st seed Wade Frame 6-3, 6-3 in the finals played on the Thursday after the tournament weekend.

Nine players participated in the consolation singles, with Dan Shipman defeating Eliott Campbell 6-2, 7-5 in the finals.

There were six menís doubles teams. First seeds Wade Frame/Chris Holmes and second seeds Phil Kadesch/Mike Kliebhan met in the finals. They played one set and one game of the second set on Sunday afternoon before rains came and forced completion later in the week. Wade Frame and Chris Holmes prevailed in a close three setter 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 to win the doubles event.

There were three womenís doubles teams with Annabelle Ambrose and Gyoku Block defeating Nancy Deitemeyer and June Weiner in the finals 6-3, 6-4.

The mixed 45 doubles draw was four and there were two very close matches in the first round with 1st seeds Mitch Gart and Vicki Hibbard defeating Concord CC members Lynn and Dave Porter 3-6, 6-4, 6-2. 2nd seeds Billy Crusco and Johanne Gauthier similarly had a tough 3 setter defeating Gyoku Block and Mark Watkins 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. In the finals, Gart and Hibbard defeated Crusco and Gauthier 6-4, 6-1.

An informal party with beer, wine and snacks was held late Saturday afternoon, as is the custom at Concord CC tournaments. Despite the weather, all participants had much fun and great tennis.TD Nigel Bentley received multiple complimentary notes about how great the tournament was from participants.
