Concord CC 60/70 Tournament Again a Big Success

The Concord CC 60/70 tournament, held from July 10-13, was a big success with 68 entries, more than last year.It is also significant that there were a number of out of section players e.g. from GA, NJ, NY, and FL.We will be seeing many of them again with the rule rescinded that kept them out of NE sectional tournaments.

The largest draw was for menís 60 singles with 21.There were some very tight matches; in the semis, finalist Kari Juusela defeated Jon Wilson 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 but then lost to last yearís 60 singles winner Jon Bates, 6-1, 6-0.However, Jon got a retirement due to injury in his semis match with Howard Rugaber from GA so he was fresher for the final.

There was a large consolation draw as well and Casey Moore defeated Tom Hastings 6-2, 6-0 to win it.

In womenís 60 singles, 1st seed Eszter Chase defeated Denise Brosseau in the final to win the title.Janet Clay defeated Caroline Cormier 6-2, 6-2 to win the consolation.

In menís 60 doubles, 2nd seeds Eliot Campbell and John Voikos defeated 1st seeds Bill Busiek and Mark Garner 6-1, 6-2 to take the title.Tommie George and Casey Moore won the consolation 6-1, 6-1 over Barry Collins and Kevin OíNeil.

The informal party was held on Saturday starting at 4PM.Those not playing got to see some great tennis as they were eating snacks and having some beer or wine.A great time was had by all, TD Nigel Bentley did a great job as he always does, and it was fun to meet some of the players that do not often play tournaments.

Entertainment for the party above!
