The Concord CC 60/70s Tournament has Lower Participation but Still Successful

The Concord CC 60/70s had lower participation than last year, mostly in the menís 60s event. Some participants indicated that some of the reason was that the menís 55 Atlantic Coast Cup was occurring at the same time and many of the good 60s players played down to play in the 55 Atlantic Coast Cup.

Some good news however Ė weather was threatening during the whole tournament but managed to hold off enough to not disrupt play. Also, there were four players that entered who were new to tournaments. It is great to see some new faces at the tournaments. There were two new menís 60 players, one new womenís 60 player and one new menís 70 player.

Menís 60 singles had a draw of 10.1st seed Ron Lafond breezed into the final beating Kevin OíNeil 6-1, 6-0 in the quarter and Wayne Lilley 6-9, 6-2 in the semis.2nd seed Bill Busiek had a tougher time winning in 3 sets in the quarter and defeating 3rd seed Jay Lubker 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in a tough semi win.LaFond took the crown by defeating Busiek in the final 6-2, 6-2.The ĺ playoff was unplayed due to Jay Lubker nursing an injury. In the consolation, Casey Moore defeated Mark Garner to win a close one, 7-6, 2-6, 7-6.

Womenís 60 singles had three entries that played round robin.Dorcas Miller defeated newcomer Caroline Daniels 5-7, 6-1, 6-2 but then lost to Denise Brosseau 6-3, 6-1.Brosseau then defeated Caroline Daniels in a walkover to win the title.

Amenities were plentiful with food, beer and wine for all the players.A number of players hung out with the food and drink and socialized while watching the play.A good time was had by all and the new tournament players said they would participate in more tournaments in the future. Thanks to TD Nigel Bentley for putting on a good tournament.
