              CHAFFEE-HART MEMORIAL SENIOR TENNIS TOURNAMENT

Summer in the Berkshires means outdoor activities of all varieties, and the July 4th weekend will find senior tennis players converging on the Country Club of Pittsfield, in Pittsfield, MA, for this yearís Chaffee-Hart Memorial Senior Tennis Tournament.  This is a new location from past years, but the tournament will once again be held on Har-Tru (clay) courts.

For more than half-a-century, the tournament has been held at the Williams College courts, attracting top-notch senior tennis players from throughout the northeast and the eastern section of the country. The college has decided not to open the clay courts this year because of budget constraints. Last year more than ninety entrants competed for prizes and ranking points in the 3-day tournament. Once again events will include men and women in the following categories: menís singles and doubles in age groups 55 to 85; womenís 70s singles and 65 and 70 doubles; and mixed doubles age groups 45 and 65 only. You must be a member of the USTA to compete in the tournament and membership can be accomplished on the USTA web site at USTA.com.

The tournament name came from the late, long-time Williams College Tennis Coach Clarence Chaffee and the late Billy Hart who served as director of the tournament for many years and was a community activist in Williamstown. This marks the first year the tournament has been held outside of the college courts.

Play begins on Friday, July 3rd and the championship rounds are scheduled for Sunday, July 5th.  Entry deadlines are Monday, June 29th at 6 pm for singles, and Friday, July 3rd at 9 pm for doubles. Spectators are encouraged to attend, but need to bring chairs.

As part of the 3-day event, a dinner will be held for participants and their guests at the Country Club of Pittsfield, Friday evening, July 3rd, at 6:30 pm, for a nominal charge of $5 per person.  There is also a cash bar in the banquet room. The dinner is sponsored and subsidized by the New England Senior Tennis Foundation, which has long supported this tournament and tennis for seniors in New England.

The Country Club of Pittsfield has allocated 5 Har-Tru (clay) courts for the tournament.  Each court has its own score boards and water fountains.  The facility has a snack bar and tennis shop that is available to players and their families, but only accepts cash payments.  The banquet hall is bright and spacious and will be decorated to honor the Independence Day holiday weekend.

Online tournament registrations can be made on the web site by using Google and putting in the number 450514509 and click on Chaffee-Hart. Mail-In entry forms are available. The pre-tournament phone number is 1-(413) 743-7534.

Tournament Director John Clarno and his team have once again put together a wide range of categories for both men and women, and encourage area senior tennis players to compete in the various events.

Additional information about the tournament can be found on the USTA web site, and local accommodations are available from the Berkshire Chamber of Commerce web site (www.berkshirechamber.com) or the Berkshire Visitor Bureau web site at (www.berkshires.org).
