Chatham 60, 65 Menís Doubles Tournament has Record Draw and Many Upsets

September 18-20, 2009

The Chatham 60 & 65 menís doubles tournament had record draws, 15 in the 60s and 11 in the 65s. Weather cooperated (although it was rather windy on Friday and Saturday) and the strong draws led to many upsets.

In the 60s, 1st seeds Charlie Cerullo and Scott Estes lost in the 2nd round to Alan Brown and Joe Lipka 7-5, 6-4. In their next round (the semis), they lost to Curt Anderson and Bob McKinley 6-2, 6-0! Anderson and McKinley knocked off 3rd seeds Bruce Mahler and Bob Tilley in their second round 7-5, 6-2. In the bottom half of the draw, 4th seeds John Fournier and Derek Lowe (not the baseball player) defeated 2nd seeds Pete Allen and Tommie George in the semis and set up a final of Anderson/McKinley versus Fournier/Lowe won by Anderson and McKinley 7-6(4), 6-1. In the consolation, Ben Fishler and Paul Rooker defeated Jim Sry and Roy Weddleton 6-2, 6-4 to win the 60s consolation.

There were also upsets in the 65s. 1st seeds John Swan and Ted Underwood lost in the semis to 3rd seeds Jerry Whitlock (our host) and Walter Beatty 7-5, 6-4. In the quarters, Bob Cantu and Peter McGee defeated 4th seeds Mike Hardesty and Phil Ludwig 7-6, 6-1. In the semis, 2nd seeds Whitey Joslin and Tom Diehl defeated Cantu and McGee 6-1, 7-6. In the finals, Beatty and Whitlock defeated Joslin and Diehl to win the 65s.

The 65s had two consolations given the commitment for at least three matches this tournament provides. There were three teams playing round-robin and John Harper and Amorn Salyapongse won both their matches to win the first round consolation. In the second round consolation, 4th seeds Mike Hardesty and Phil Ludwig defeated Ken Miller and Ray Brodeur 6-4, 6-0.

Jerry and Di Whitlock again had a great party at their house on Saturday night. This is probably the most lavish party on the New England tournament scene with many wives and significant others also attending.
