Chatham Mens’ Doubles Tournament adds 70s Age Group

September 16-18, 2011

The Chatham Mens doubles tournament, known as one of the best NE tournaments of the year, added 70 doubles in addition to the 60 and 65 doubles events.  As is usual, there was some great competition this year in all age groups. Also, as in previous years, all players were guaranteed three matches. The amenities are also great with lunch provided on Saturday and the big party Saturday night.

In men’s 60 doubles, 1st seeds George Deptula and Jon Wilson defeated unseeded Mas Kimball and George Ulrich 6-2, 6-4. Kimball and Ulrich upset 2nd seeds Pete Allen and Tommie George in the semis 6-4, 6-4. In the first round consolation, Curt Anderson and Bob McKinley defeated David Ungar and Roy Weddleton in the final 6-0, 6-2. In the 1st round reprieve, i.e. the losers in the 1st round of the consolation, Jay Lubker and Dick Woods defeated Eliot Campbell and Kevin O’Neil 6-2, 6-1.

The 65 doubles had the largest draw with 13 teams. 1st seeds Bill White and Bill Ruth prevailed in the final over 3rd seeds Walt Beatty and Phil Estes 6-4, 6-3. Estes and Beatty had a very tough match in the semis with 2nd seeds Ted Underwood and John Fournier winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-3 to get to the finals.  In the first round consolation final, Bruce Mahler and Bob Tilley defeated Bill Litwin and Paul Rooker 6-1, 6-3. In the 2nd round consolation final, Tom Diehl and Chuck Kinyon defeated longtime partners Dave Fuller and Ken Wall 6-3, 6-3. In the 2nd round reprieve, Paul Ajemian and Pat Rossetti defeated Rob Granger and David Warner 7-6(5), 6-4. It gets complicated when draws are large and everyone plays three times!

65 doubles finalists Walt Beatty and Phil Estes with TD Jerry Whitlock and winners Bill White and Bill Ruth

70 doubles finalists Whitey Joslin and Bill Simonton with winners Bob Dilworth and Roy Anderson

In the new 70s age group, 2nd seeds Roy Anderson and Bob Dilworth had a very tight 7-5, 5-7, 6-3 win in the finals over 1st seeds Whitey Joslin and Bill Simonton.  In the consolation, John Durante and James Rougvie prevailed over Alan Gardner and Peter Rosenbaum in a close three setter 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. And – in the semi final consolation, Art Graham and John Swan coped with the wind to defeat Ray Brodeur and Ken Miller 6-3, 6-4.

Great view of the ocean as well as the courts!

Good conversation over lunch

One disappointment was a regular from past years, Charlie Cerullo from NJ, was not able to make it this year. The guys really missed him. The gals also missed his wife Janet! Also, TD and host Jerry Whitlock was not able to play either as he is recovering from getting a new hip! But – he will be back next year probably playing better than ever!

The lavish party was held at the clubhouse this year rather than at Jerry’s house as the extra event meant his house could probably not handle the extra players. The party was just as great as in the past, however, with much food, drink and good camaraderie. It is such a great venue and social event as well as great tennis that many wives and significant others also came for the festivities (and the ambience!).

The Party!
