Three New England Women Win Gold Balls by Winning at Cat I National Events
Judy Smith from Brookline won two gold balls in 80 doubles with her doubles partner Burnett Herrick from North Carolina, first at the national clay court tournament held in Huntsville, AL from April 11-17, and second at the national hard court tournament held in La Jolla, CA from May 11-17. In both cases, Judy and Burnett were the 1st seeds.
More recently, Vicki McEvoy and Molly Hahn won three gold balls between them in 65 singles and 65 doubles (they were doubles partners) at the indoor hard court tournament at Overland Park, KS from June 22-28. Very interesting in that in singles, Vicki was the 2nd seed and Molly was the 3rd seed, and they both made it through to the finals. Molly defeated 1st seed Brenda Carter from SC in one semi 6-2, 6-7(4), 7-5 and Vicki defeated 4th seed Wilma Lee from CA 6-2, 7-6(5) in the other semi. In the finals, Vicki defeated Molly 6-1, 1-6, 7-6(2) to get a gold ball.
In doubles, Vicki and Molly were seeded 2nd and played 1st seeds Cynthia Bobb and Brenda Carter (the same woman Molly defeated in the singles semifinal) in the final. They defeated Bobb and Carter 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 in the final so Vicki got a second gold ball and Molly got a first gold ball for a total of three between them.
Great work Judy, Vicki and Molly!!
