New England Women Senior Players Gain Gold Balls at Recent CAT I Grass Nationals

At the Grass Court National at West Side Tennis Club held from July 13-19, 3rd seeds Lee Delfausse from Concord, NH and Sue Kimball from Oak Bluffs, MA won the women’s 70 doubles by beating 2nd seeds Carolann  Castell and Judy Louie 6-4, 7-6 in the final.

At the Grass Court National at Germantown Cricket Club held from July 19-26, 1st seed Vicky McEvoy from Cambridge, MA won the 65 singles by defeating 3rd seed Leslie Pixley 6-1, 6-1 in the final.  McEvoy then teamed with Molly Hahn (1st seeds) to win the 65 doubles over 2nd seeds Cynthia Babb and Pamela Simons by a score of 6-2, 6-4.

Note that in the earlier indoor hard court national tournament at Overland Park, KS this year, Vicki McEvoy won the 65 singles and she and Molly Hahn won the 65 doubles.  Also, at the clay national at Huntsville, AL and at the hard court national at La Jolla, CA, Judy Smith won gold balls in women’s 80 doubles playing with partner Burnett Herrick at both tournaments.  These wins were the subject of an earlier breaking news item.

Another interesting Judy Smith story – the women’s 80 grass doubles event was scheduled for the grass national at the West Side Tennis Club but there were no other women’s 80 teams.  So, she entered the Germantown Grass National and played down in the women’s 75 doubles and made it to the finals where she and her partner lost to 1st seeds Dori Devries and Carol Wood.

Great work Lee, Sue, Vicki, Molly and Judy!!!
