Grass Slam at Pt. Judith CC is Great Success Despite Losing 1.5 Days to Rain

There was a threatening weather forecast of 1-2 inches of rain on the first day of the tournament (Thursday) resulting in a total rearrangement of schedules.Instead of starting on Thursday, play started on Friday at noon to give the courts time to recover on Friday morning.

There were a total of 98 players in the tournament with a number of new faces not seen before or not recently. The courts were in pristine condition and the venue was beautiful.

One negative, however, is that there were no entries in the menís 80, 85, or 90 age groups and the womenís 70 and 75 age groups (one 75 doubles team entered but had no opponent so then entered the 60 doubles instead).

You expect that points and matches would be shorter on grass than on other surfaces. However, there were a number of exceptions. For example, two womenís 50 singles matches involving NY player Keiko Tase were lengthy featuring long baseline rallies.Unfortunately for her, she lost both of them, although both went for about three hours. In her match with Meg Donahue, one spectator counted how many balls went over the net in one rally and it was 55!

50ís Events

In menís 50 singles, #1 seeded player Russ Strong made it to the finals handily.Unseeded John Flatley defeated #2 seed Tom Weber 7-5, 7-5 to meet Strong in the finals. The final was a nail biter with Strong defeating Flatley in two tiebreakers in more than three hours to take the crown.Unfortunately, there was no play in ĺ playoffs or consolations, so players left ranking points on the table.

Womenís 50 singles had three entries that played round robin. The two featuring Keiko Tase were both marathons as mentioned above but Meg Donahue won both her matches to take the title.Mary McAuley took second place.

In menís 50 doubles, 1st seeds Jon Bates and Harlan Stone and 2nd seeds Carl Norbeck and Bill Previdi had little trouble making it to the finals. The finals provided amazing doubles and the onlookers were transfixed!Bates and Stone finally prevailed 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 to take the title. No ĺ playoff or consolation matches were played.

Womenís 50 doubles had three teams and VT duo of Kristen Hartley and Jeanne Hulsen defeated Meg Donahue and Karen Neri 6-2, 6-3 and Wendy Ferrelli and Mary Toth 6-1, 6-2 to take the crown.Donahue and Neri won their match against Ferrelli and Toth to take 2nd place.
