Ken Rickson Memorial Senior Championships at Quincy Tennis Club - Few Upsets But Excellent Tennis

The brick red clay of the Quincy Tennis Club once again played host to the Ken Rickson Memorial Senior Championships. Ken was a long time player and advocate for high quality tournaments.  For many years Ken made this one of New Englandís finest tournaments.  A founding member of the New England Senior Tennis Foundation, Ken ran this model tournament from 1997 to 2005.

A June Noríeaster brought heavy rains, which played havoc with the schedule but with flexible rescheduling and some doubles competitors who were willing to play in a heavy mist, followed by some beautiful weather, the matches finished with only a one day delay.

A large deep field produced some long and extremely competitive matches. The seeding committees demonstrated their skill, with the #1 seed defeating the #2 seed in the finals of three of the four events.

70 Singles#1 seed Niesi Sie was ranked #1 in Florida in the 65ís for 2012.He moved quickly to the finals with solid victories over James Hufford In the quarters and Ken Miller in the semis. On the other half of the draw, in the quarters, #2 seed, Jack Reynolds fought back from 2-5 in the second set to beat Ken Baker in straight sets and then went on to outlast Ed Coakley in a hard fought three setter. Sie defeated Reynolds (6-1 6-0) in the finals in a match that was far more competitive than the score would indicate.

65 Singles In the quarters Buzz Durkin outlasted Ron Zack in a three setter 4-6 6-3 6-3, while Yoshi Akabane bested Alan Greenbaum 6-2 6-2.In the semis, #1 seed Bruce Leibig won over Durkin 6-2 6-0 while Yoshi and #2 seed Roger Clark had a tough three set 3 Ĺ hour marathon with Clark on the winning side 4-6 6-3 6-4.The finals was a three hour two set struggle with Leibig the winner over Clark 6-3 7-5.

70 DoublesA heavy mist arrived in conjunction with the semis of this event.Despite the best efforts of the combatants to play through it, these two matches had to be postponed mid-match for a 48-hour period. After the delay McAfee/Reynolds beat Stahl/Gardner 7-5 6-0 and Miller/Swanson bested Rougvie/Fallon 6-1 6-3.In the finals McAfee and Reynolds cruised to 6-0 6-0 win.

65 Doubles The 65 doubles was the only one with any upsets. The draw contained several faces familiar to the QTC.In the semis, Joe Ryan and Butch Gulizia upset #1 seeds Bruce Mahler and Bob Tilley 7-56-2, while Phil Ludwig and Bill Litwin knocked out #2 seeds Pat Rossetti and Paul Ajemian6-2 6-4.The finals was a classic matchup with Ryan and Gulizia ending up on top 4-6 7-5 7-5.

While rain required substantial rescheduling, once the sun arrived, things moved forward nicely.  There was a large field, but few surprises, and the third year with the tournament named the Ken Rickson Memorial Championships was a success with competitive matches, good lunches and a good time had by all.
