Henry Tiberio wins Two Gold Balls at the US Grass Court National at Longwood CC!

by Bob McKinley

Henry Tiberio is the US Grass Court 90 and over singles and doubles Champion! In an unbelievable match on 8/27 at Longwood, our Henry won another gold ball by beating the first seed - Fred Kovaleski 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7)!  Fred just turned 90 and is an extremely accomplished player (his William and Mary tennis team won back to back national collegiate championships in 1947 and 1948!).

According to Henry, he held 9 match points before closing out the match in a 9-7 tie-break for the third set!  Many are saying it was one of the finest matches ever played at Longwood.

In doubles, there were three 90 doubles teams playing round robin and Henry and his partner Stephen Parson won both their matches to win the gold ball!  They defeated W. T. Mathes from Tennessee and his local partner Emmanual Pappas 6-0, 6-0 in their first match and then defeated our own Yutaka Kobayashi (Koby) and his NY partner Fred Kovaleski (who Henry defeated in singles) 6-2, 6-1.

Once again Henry shows us how to be a great competitor and an even better person!

Congratulations Henry!  We all want to grow up to be like you!
