Wilbraham resident Judy Van Raalte played the United States Tennis Association (USTA) National Grasscourt Championships held July 23-29 in Germantown, PA and teamed with Anna Zimmerman from Indiana to win the Women's 45 doubles title in a stunning 7-6, 7-6 upset over the top-seeded defending champions, Mary Dailey of Florida and Erika Smith of California.
Playing in a tournament together for the first time, Van Raalte and Zimmerman claimed the first-set tiebreaker 7-1 and raced out to a 5-1 lead in the second set before holding off a furious comeback by their opponents and winning the second-set tiebreaker 7-4. For their efforts, Van Raalte and Zimmerman were awarded the "gold ball" given annually to titlists in each of the USTA's four championship events (indoor, grass court, clay court, and hard court).
