Walter Rapp-Shirley Fry Senior Tourney - 2017

The tournament started ominously with rain falling until just before the start of matches on Thursday.  The rain did stop with two 75 and over matches held indoors on clay at the Bloomfield Racquet Club.  In first round matches, Allan Gardner defeated Gerry Rothman 6-3, 6-1 while Roy Anderson downed Bob Chase 6-1, 6-2.

Over at the Hartford Tennis Club, in the 75s, George Lynch defeated Holbrook (Hobey) Hyde 4 and 2.  The earliest finals probably in the history of the Rapp Fry competition took place on day one when the 80s doubles team of Ernie True and Peter Reiss went three sets to defeat the no. 1 seeds Mal Swanson and Dave Lowry 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 as darkness settled over the courts.

The next 3 days of matches were held in sunny, hot humid conditions.  The 81 year old Hartford Tennis Club provided the players with well groomed courts, scorecards, singles sticks, plenty of tasty snacks, sandwiches, beer and assorted beverages.  The tournament director, Mike Louis, the resident manager/pro of HTC along with his staff kept things moving along smoothly for the players.  Fifty one players participated this year versus 62 last year.

In singles, no.1 seed Ron Chicoine dropped out before play started.  In the semis, Joe Trausch squeaked by George Kramer 6-4, 7-6 while Pete Appleton, a HTC member, took down no. 2 seed Steve Kapiloff 6-4, 7-5.  In the finals, Appleton outhit Trausch in long rallies eventually winning 6-2, 6-3 in a match closer than the scores indicate.  Eugene Batiste defeated Norton Wheeler 6-2, 6-2 in the consolation finals.

The doubles witnessed Appleton and Kapiloff overwhelm two HTC members, Gene Batiste and Steve King two and love.

In doubles, the duo of Laurie Weinstein and Courtia Worth were the champs in a round robin.  They defeated a tough seasoned team of Carolyn Fournier and Lynn Miller 6-1, 6-4 and HTC members Nancy Bacall and Lynn Pollack 6-0-6-1.

In doubles, the no. 1 seed of Peter Allen and Tommie George won easily over Ray Brodeur and George Ulrich 6-0, 6-3.
